Today we released with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) an update of our joint initial rapid assessment, which was released in November 2023, and estimates the impacts of the war on the State of Palestine and on #Gaza. The updated #GazaWarImpact assessment estimates the impacts at six months, with projections for seven-, eight- and nine-months scenarios. As the war in Gaza approaches its seventh month, the poverty rate in the State of Palestine continues to escalate, reaching 58.4%, thrusting nearly 1.74 million additional people into poverty. The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) also sustains a staggering plunge by 26.9%, accounting for a loss of US$7.1 billion from a 2023 no-war baseline. If the war continues for nine months, poverty is estimated to more than double, raising the number of additional people pushed into poverty to more than 1.86 million, while the decrease of GDP would reach 29% with total losses of US$7.6 billion. All countries should promote and protect the human rights of all persons without discrimination and are obligated to do so by international law. Despite this, many millions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer people continue to suffer discrimination, marginalization, poverty, violence, incarceration and even loss of life solely because of who they are. Nevertheless, across the globe there are courageous and visionary advocates for equality who are effecting positive change – through ground-breaking initiatives – and often at great risk to themselves. On this International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we are excited to launch with ILGA World the #InternationalPrideAwards, celebrating the tireless efforts of #LGBTIQ+ equality heroes 🌍. Nominations open on 1 June. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eisV5gRi #IDAHOBIT

We are closely following the tragedy that has struck Rio Grande do Sul. The situation is heartbreaking in the 458 affected municipalities and even more so for the families and friends of the 151 victims. UNDP stands ready to support Brazil in the early recovery and reconstruction, which will undoubtedly require a collective effort. Photo credit: Governo do RS, Marinha do Brasil, Defesa Civil RS

Billions will vote this year in what has been called the ‘super election’ year - and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (#LGBTIQ+) people must not be excluded.   On International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, see how we have been working with partners like Luxembourg to break barriers, strengthen laws, combat harassment and promote equal rights for all. https://go.undp.org/ZPP   #PartnersAtCore #IDAHOBIT

#HumanRights are for everyone, everywhere. Yet, millions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (#LGBTIQ+) people around the world continue to suffer from discrimination, marginalization, poverty, violence, imprisonment, and even loss of life solely because of who they are. On this International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia, UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner spotlights our work to ensure no one is left behind. https://lnkd.in/ejvFv7zp #IDAHOBIT

Our new LGBTI Inclusion Index serves as a global benchmark and guide for countries to assess their progress towards achieving full inclusion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex people according to 51 indicators across five strategic areas. We rolled out the Index, engaging participants from 52 countries and involving a comprehensive training program on data collection and index calculation. The pilot phase culminated in the creation of indices in the Dominican Republic, Georgia, Guyana, New Zealand, Pakistan, and Viet Nam. Ahead of Friday's International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, check out the key findings and lessons from these pilots, as well as recommendations for scaling up safe data collection and use, to advance the inclusive development of #LGBTIQ+ people and ensure that no one is left behind: https://lnkd.in/eCXRQ6mw #IDAHOBIT
