  Dear Reader

Welcome to the first issue of the IGBP newsletter for 2020.

2020 will be a landmark year for biodiversity. A number of key international meetings, such as the CMS COP13, Gandhinagar and the World Biodiversity Forum, Davos in February; UN Ocean Conference at Lisbon and IUCN World Conservation Congress, Marseilles in June; and the UN General Assembly, New York in September, will set the tone and agenda for future environmental actions. In October 2020 the global community will assemble at the 15th meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in Kunming, China to agree on the post 2020 global biodiversity framework.

The IPBES Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services has already cautioned us that with current trajectories we cannot achieve biodiversity conservation and sustainability goals. We need ‘transformative changes across economic, social, political and technological factors to achieve biodiversity goals for 2030 and beyond’. The Open-ended Working Group of the CBD on post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework has released the zero draft of the post-2020 biodiversity framework with a vision of a world living in harmony with nature where ‘by 2050, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and wisely used, maintaining ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all people’. Realisation of this vision will require engagement and transformative actions by everyone – governments, citizens, businesses, civil society, academia and international development cooperation.

The fifth issue of this newsletter features an article on the Zero Draft on the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework and a segment on ‘Wetlands, Biodiversity and People’ in celebration of the World Wetlands Day 2020. We welcome your ideas, contributions and feedback towards further improving our engagement to contribute towards setting and realising the vision of ‘Living in harmony with nature’.

Warmly,
Ravindra Singh, Programme Director

Putting Biodiversity on a Path to Recovery
Zero Draft: Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework

Biodiversity, and the benefits it provides, is fundamental to human well-being and a healthy planet. Despite ongoing efforts, biodiversity is deteriorating worldwide, and this decline is projected to continue or worsen under business-as-usual scenarios. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat has released the zero draft of the global biodiversity framework which “builds on the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020” and aims to bring about a “transformation in society’s relationship with biodiversity and to ensure that, by 2050, the shared vision of living in harmony with nature is fulfilled.” The proposed framework, published on 13 January, presents five long-term goals for..

Point Calimere
Wetlands, Biodiversity and People
The sky was a clear bright blue, dotted with fluffy white clouds as we drove along the slightly bumpy, road that was broad enough to admit two vehicles. Electric towers ran through the fields, almost diagonal to the boundaries set by the existing scenery while cattle grazed contentedly in the fields which varied from dry, to just ploughed, to bright green. Many small canals ran beside the fields appearing alternatively along the roadside. Small, brightly coloured, slightly washed out temples merged with the open landscape where the only interruptions were the spiky Palmyra ...
