Side event at SB50 in Bonn: Co-benefits of climate reporting

A final side event by the IKI-funded project Information Matters took place at the Climate Change Conference (SB50) in Bonn. The event was an opportunity to highlight the results and countries’ lessons learnt following the support through the project. Representatives of 5 partner countries gave insights on challenges, benefits and capacity gaps within their national MRV systems.

On June 21, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia (MEPA), the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of Germany (BMUB) and the Initiative for Climate Action Transparency (ICAT) hosted the Side Event “Benefits of Climate Reporting beyond meeting international Reporting Requirements” at SB50 in Bonn. After a keynote speech by the German Environment Agency on the value of South-South and North-South cooperation, country representatives from Chile, the Dominican Republic, Georgia, Ghana and Viet Nam provided insights on their experience with specific challenges, benefits and capacity gaps within their national MRV systems. For example, all country representatives highlighted the improved exchange of information with the private sector as a result of enhancing their MRV systems and capacities, while challenges remain regarding internal processes and new aspects of the Enhanced Transparency Framework under the Paris Agreement will require specific trainings.

Furthermore, the event was an opportunity to highlight the results and countries’ lessons learnt following the support of the IKI-funded project Information Matters. In this vein, Viet Nam highlighted the importance of the gap analysis conducted after each Biennial Update Report submission, comprehensively provided by the Information Matters project.

Hence, Information Matters was able to not only contribute to the development of national MRV systems in the respective partner countries, but also provide the countries with feedback and processes for being able to critically reflect and enhance their national approaches and reports going beyond the support provided during the project period.
